What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to perceive, interpret, evaluate, control, and use emotions to communicate and relate to others effectively and constructively.

This type of intelligence refers to both internal and external emotional competency. More than expressing and controlling your emotions, EI also refers to the ability to understand, interpret, and respond to other people’s emotions.

EI is important for everyone working tankerman jobs. At AccuTRANS, during onboarding, we provide unique tankerman training that hones this skill.

“Their training program is top-notch,” John, a tankerman, explained, “It covers things you don’t see in some other companies. They won’t turn you loose until you’re prepared for it.”

What Are the Elements of Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence includes four core elements, which are essential to succeeding in the conditions a tankerman job poses. These elements are:

Perceiving emotions

Being able to perceive emotions is the first step to understanding them. This can involve perceiving and understanding nonverbal cues and signals like body language and facial expressions.

Reasoning with emotions

You must use perceived emotions to promote constructive critical thinking. Emotions help us prioritize what we focus on and react to because we respond emotionally to things that grab our attention.

Understanding emotions

The emotions we perceive can mean several different things. For example, if someone is angry, it is important to determine the cause of that emotion. If your boss is angry, it could mean they are unhappy with your work, received a parking ticket, or have problems with their spouse.

Managing emotions

After understanding emotions, managing them helps control and respond to your emotions appropriately and respond to others’ appropriately.

This is just a broad overview. At AccuTRANS, we dive into each component during tankerman training to help trainees build these skills.

Why Emotional Intelligence is Important to Tankerman Training

It is impossible to understate the importance of emotional intelligence, which goes beyond hard technical skills. EI enables those working a tankerman job to adapt to shifting demands and develop greater self-awareness and empathy to work with their colleagues.

The AccuTRANS EI curriculum focuses on five key areas to help logistics and tankerman employees to perform their jobs safeyly, efficiently, and professionally: self-regulation, self-assessment, empathy, motivation, and social skills.

Self-Regulation

Self-regulation is a key component of this training. Tankerman are taught how to recognize and control their emotions in order to maintain a positive work environment. They learn how to identify and appropriately manage any stress they might be feeling related to the job.

Self-Assessment

Self-assessment is also an important part of EI Training. Tankermen and logistics personnel are provided with tools and strategies to evaluate their own performance in order to identify any areas where improvement may be needed. This helps them become more self-aware of their strengths and weaknesses, so that they can adjust accordingly when performing tasks or interacting with others.

Empathy

Empathy plays a big role in emotional intelligence as well. Employees are trained on how to adopt an empathetic mindset towards their colleagues, customers, and other stakeholders, so that they can better understand each other’s needs and perspectives, leading to more effective communication and collaboration within the organization and with customers.

Motivation

Motivation is also covered in the Velocity Course. Tankermen are taught how to stay motivated even when faced with challenging tasks or difficult situations at work. They learn different techniques for setting goals for themselves so that they remain focused on achieving those goals despite any obstacles or setbacks they may encounter along the way.

Social Skills

Additionally, AccuTRANS focuses on developing social skills as well as emotional intelligence. Tankermen learn how to interact effectively with colleagues from different backgrounds and cultures in order to foster teamwork and promote harmony within the workplace . They also gain an understanding of different behavioral expectations for various situations so that they can act accordingly when working on complex projects or resolving conflicts between colleagues.

By enabling individuals to accept criticism, accept responsibility, and communicate their feelings to promote constructive conflict resolution, we help our tankermen and logistics team understand each other’s jobs, the challenges they face, and the decisions they have to make. Bridging this gap minimizes tensions and establishes a positive, productive work culture.

EI is important for career advancement, too. During tankerman training, we develop self-assessment and goal-setting skills through a concept called future state vs. present state and craft personal and professional development programs (PDP) for each trainee.

“You have to evaluate your current state to see what your future state is,” Dwayne elaborated, “because how do you know how far you need to go if you’re unwilling to honestly look at where you are at today?”

Our goal is to make a difference in employees’ lives and make our trainees better people and not just better employees because we care about them as individuals. We firmly believe a better quality of life results in better quality in the workplace.

EI is necessary to thrive in this industry. Your IQ might get you a job, but at the end of the day, your EI gets you promoted.
